Chapter 22

Amy stared at her crucifix as she held its chain in her hand and let it dangle below her palm. She was sitting on the same two-seater sofa in Michael Walker’s lounge that she’d found herself laying on the previous evening. He was currently in the kitchen making them something to eat for dinner.

“So,” she yelled out to him, “you really think that this saved my life?”

“Not exactly,” he yelled back, “hang on, I’m nearly finished.”

It wasn’t long before he entered, carrying a plate containing what he said was his own version of chicken Parmigiana. She didn’t like to say that she’d never heard of it before, but it seemed to be a chicken breast cooked in a tomato-based marinade, topped with Parmesan cheese and, if nothing else, it certainly smelt good!

She’d offered to help him make dinner but he insisted he was fine, so she accepted his offer to take a break and gather her thoughts about what she’d seen and been told. A small part of her had thought that maybe she should keep an eye on what he was doing, but a larger part of her had realised that, if he had wanted to harm her, not only could he have done it by now but he almost certainly had the power to do something a lot more subtle than drug her food!

She put her crucifix back on over her head and took the plate off him with a polite ‘thank you’ before resting it on her lap. She waited until he returned with his own plate and seated himself in the easy chair opposite her before starting to eat.

“Uh, what do you think?” he asked hopefully.

She finished chewing the tender piece of chicken she was currently enjoying and smiled. “It’s very nice. Thank you very much.” He again gave that broad smile that she now knew meant he was genuinely chuffed. She suddenly realised that she really liked that smile, it was sweet. “So, how did my crucifix save me?” she asked.

“Like I said, technically speaking, it didn’t. The Higher Power did.”

“Sorry?”

“What most people call God!”

She stopped eating and stared at him. “Say what?”

“You sound surprised. But you must believe in order for it to have worked.” Now she was puzzled. “Sorry, let me explain. Well, at least as best as I can. You see, not even the most powerful and knowledgeable wizards understand this completely but there is a power greater than both this world and the spirit world. Very little is understood about it, but it can certainly influence events both here and in the spirit world. It seems to have the power to literally switch magic off. It provides protection to people who have strong faith through religious artefacts and symbols, as well as holy ground.”

“So it could be an intelligent supreme being like we believe?” Amy asked excitedly.

Mike gave a wry smile. “Well speaking as a religious man myself, I certainly like to think so.”

“Are you Catholic too?”

He shook his head. “Church of England.
